But yield who will to their separation,
My object in living is to unite
My avocation and my vocation
As my two eyes make one in sight.
– Robert Frost
Over the past decade or so, there has been much talk about work/life balance. The focus still seems to be on urging us to disengage and spend less time at work—investing more in home, family, community, and spiritual life. I fully recognize how easy it is to let work get out of hand to the point it squeezes out these other very important aspects of our lives. However, I shun the notion that work is only a necessary evil we must endure to afford brief moments of pleasure in other pursuits.
Frost charges us to seek ways to blend that which we do to earn our living (our vocation) with activities we do for pleasure and care deeply about outside of work (our avocation). In my ideal vision of a whole and rich life, work and play do not live at direct odds; rather, we find a way to intertwine them, however subtle. When our play informs and affirms our work, and vice versa, we can focus energy in one positive direction that, to me, helps define the notion of life in balance.
This year, I’ve challenged each of our Media 1 team members (our “Media1ders”) to share just one of their many favorite after-hours pursuits—something that they feel enriches and defines their life outside of work, but also flavors the work they do. I share these stories as our way of saying thanks to all our customers, clients, and friends. I hope this inspires you to take time to consider how all the activities you do inside and outside of the workplace meld together into a whole, balanced life.
Happy Holidays from all of us at Media 1, and best wishes for a healthy, propsperous, and joyful 2011!
